Visiting a Glacier, M. V. Mare Australis
New Antarctic small cruise ship and itinerary offers eleven days of memorable scenery and close-up experiences with wildlife, glaciers and more.

The newest expedition cruise ship in the Antarctic is a former Chilean Navy vessel that has been refurbished for adventure travelers to enjoy some of the world's most spectacular scenery and wildlife.

The Antarctic Dream, is a small ship -- just 78 person capacity -- which allows it to get into the smaller bays and through the spaces between massive icebergs that larger ships cannot travel. And that means guests can get closer to the fur seals, humpback whales, orcas, and leopard seals that populate the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.

This is an 11 day/10 night expedition, that includes a daily Zodiac raft excursion and the opportunity to walk the frozen tundra. There also are daily lectures by experienced naturalist wildlife experts and geologists.

Expedition eader and historian Julio Preller has spent more than a decade in the Antarctic region. Also on board is Rene Preller, a 26-year veteran of the Antarctic region with more than 150 voyages to Antarctica under his belt.

The ship features a large dining room, library, auditorium, gym, sauna, laundry, satellite email and phone so you can share your stories and images even before you return home. Cabins have private baths. Trips range in price from $5,990 for cabins to $9,990 for suites.

The Antarctic Dream departs from and returns to the port city of Ushuaia, Argentina, in Patagonia. This is unlike other Antactic vessels, which go back and forth between Ushuaia and Punta Arenas, Chile.

The Mare Australis is a top-rated small expedition ship that cruises between Chile and Argentina, through the Straits of Magellan in Tierra del Fuego. The itinerary includes Magdalena Island, home to one of the world's largest colonies of penguins, and the snow-covered mountains of the Darwin Range.

Extend the Antarctic adventure either in Chile or Argentina. Spend some time hiking in Patagonia, where Torres del Paines National Park offers some of the most dramatic scenery on the planet. Stay at Patagonia Eco-Camp, a small colony of geodescic domes. The camp is mostly solar powered, including hot water for showers.

Or, head north and enjoy the cosmopolitan cities of Santiago, and its nearby wineries, or Buenos Aires, and the opportunity to learn tango dancing.

Remember that the seasons in Chile and Argentina are the reverse of North America -- September in Patagonia and Antarctica is the beginning of spring, not the beginning of autumn.

Patagonia and Antarctica are incredible travel adventures of sweeping beauty and abundant wildlife, and small ship cruises like these let you get close to both.
