ATV riding in the Wyoming Big Horns Mountains presents challenges to the seasoned ATV rider along with pleasurable, scenic riding for the beginning and leisure ATV rider.

Through-out the State of Wyoming, several beautiful places have been allotted for some very relaxing and enjoyable ATV riding. Camping, fishing, horseback riding, and walking trails are a few of the many outdoors activities one can pursue in an outing within the state. One such location is located in the northern section of the state, close to the Montana border. The Big Horn Range has all of these activities and more…

Located near the towns of Big Horn, Buffalo, and Sheridan, and just a few hours from famous Yellowstone National Park, the Big Horn Range is never far from the necessities in life. Buy an ATV permit from a local gas station or Sheridan’s Wal-Mart (a yearly permit was priced at $15.00) and fill-up the gas containers, buy the groceries, and don’t forget the fishing license. One should be able to find trail maps as well.

Trails encompass wider and smoother logging roads, to all rock dirt bike paths, with the ATV trails mixed in-between. The logging roads are comfortable enough with today’s ATV suspension, even some automobiles can navigate them, but those rock hills will give one an exuberant ride. Caution is necessary as some of those ATV and dirt bike trails weave in and out of large boulder formations which scrape the sides of the ATV as they are passed. Some of those rock trails seem to go on endlessly. These rock trails are recommended for the seasoned, in-shape rider, since they can be grueling, and be prepared for the occasional ding on the rims.

A ride along the Big Horn trail system provides the experience of many wonderful objects of nature. Wild life and natural beauty are abundant. Heavily forested trails suddenly give way to large, scenic meadows with breath taking views of the mountain tops, and then, on the other side of the meadow, it’s back into the forests with the trail. This picture is thankfully repeated through-out the ride. Not to mention, moose, elk, big horn sheep, mountain goat, and deer are all crossing the paths, somewhere; if one keeps a leisurely pace, the wildlife will be seen. The lucky rider may also witness a cattle drive on the move, as this is open range.

Numerous small to medium crystal clear streams will be encountered along the way, most of which contain trout for those who wish to stop and try their luck. Hopefully they won’t fall in, as the water is cold. (The writer, umm, knows...) Find a mountain reservoir and find solicit, or find a place along the east side of the range and gaze across the Wyoming high plains and what seems to be the whole country. After the days ride, and the time to return to camp or cabin has come, with so many trails to choose from, the option is there to never pass the same scenery twice.

Remember to follow the rules and keep our places to ride open. Stay on the trails and tread lightly if off-trail riding ids necessary. Wear a helmet and be mindful of others along the trails. When meeting a horse and rider, remember to give way, shut down the engine, and remove the helmet so that the horse is not spooked.

Refreshing mountain mornings, warm days, and the crisp mountain air of the mild evenings, along with the ATV ride, provide an overall pleasurable experience. It is an experience to be cherished; one that the rider will have the urge to repeat.
