Travel Tools to Make Life Easier on the Road

A collection of the latest gear, gadgets and tools that will add safety and convenience to your next adventure travel excursion.

The best gear and gadgets are small and lightweight, so they don't take up lots of room in your checked bags or carry-on, and easy to use, so you don't also have to pack an instruction manual. Here are some of the newest and best:

Sometimes you need soap when there isn't any. These sheets from Spilo are 100% soap. Just add water and rub. The soap sheets work equally well for hands and face and can tackle small items of laundry. There are 50 sheets to a package, inside a colorful and portable case, priced at a reasonable $2.25.

It's not necessary to be fluent in the language of the country you are visiting, but it is necessary to know at least how to say hello, thank you, and some basic questions and phrases. There's a variety of electronic translators available from Franklin, ranging from a five-language European model (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish) for $24.95 to a $229.95 version that contains 12 languages and speaks its 450,000 words and phrases in a human voice. Chinese, Japanese and Korean are displayed phonetically, in the same Roman alphabet letters you are reading here.

With cold and flu season in full flight, it's easy to take precautions with Nozin. It's a non-prescription, anti-microbial solution designed to fight off harmful germs at the body's most vulnerable point, the nose. A couple of sprays kills disease-causing pathogens for up to eight hours, enough to protect you from the sneezing passengers behind you and next to you on the airplane, scuba dive boat or mountain bike rental shop.

New from clothing and gadget company Travelsmith is a small scale to help you avoid charges for overweight luggage. Just attach the suitcase handle to the hook on the scale, and lift. The $9.75 price just could pay for itself with its first use.

Instead of carrying your lunch or dinner on board the plane in a paper bag, protect it inside a neoprene tote, also from Travelsmith. Neoprene is the material used for diver wetsuits, so its thermal properties will keep food warm or cold, while it cushions your sandwich, banana or whatever from getting smooshed into inedible. Then, use the tote as a picnic basket, shopping bag, or both, during your trip.

None of these gadgets or gear is absolutely necessary, but any and all will make your next adventure travel excursion more comfortable.
