Colorado is home to a lot of open places, but getting to the high mountains is not always possible, especially if one wants a quick afternoon getaway. Golden Gate Canyon State Park, offers adventure for all throughout the year, and is close to the cities of Golden and Denver.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park is located approximately one hour west from the city center of Denver. There are several ways to get there if coming from different cities. The park website has directions and downloadable maps.
When arriving at the park, one should first step into the visitor center. The center offers information about the park, including natural history displays, facts about the wildlife, a conference room, and restroom facilities. It is also where visitors pay the park entrance fee, which costs $6 for a daily pass. There are also fees for backcountry camping or established tent sites, picnic areas, etc.
Throughout the park there are a variety of activities that visitors can enjoy. Trails stretch throughout the 12,000+ acres of land, and vary in length. Some of the trails are just for hikers, while others allow users to take horses or mountain bikes on the trail. The park trails also accommodate cross country skiers in the wintertime. Hunting and fishing are also allowed in the park, but one should check with the park regarding permits and licenses.
For those who want to spend a relaxing afternoon with the family, picnic areas are available, and park staff present educational programs for young and old alike.
