New Grand Canyon West SkywalkGlass skywalk 4,000 feet above Colorado RiverThe Grand Canyon Skywalk is an engineering marvel, a glass walkway that extends 70 feet from the canyon's rim, 4000 feet above the canyon floor.
The Grand Canyon Skywalk is the first ever cantilever-shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the canyon’s floor. The boomerang-shaped walkway extends 70 feet out from the canyon’s rim. This state-of-the-art engineering marvel is being moved into place on March 7, 2007, in a special ceremony. NASA Apollo Eleven Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, known for making historic first steps on the moon, will be the first to walk across the Skywalk on March 20. Grand Canyon Skywalk opens to the public on March 28. Located at Grand Canyon West’s Eagle Point, The Skywalk will be open from dawn to dusk. Admission will be $25 per person in addition to a the entry fee to Grand Canyon West. Only 120 people will be allowed on the bridge at any one time. This is both for safety as well as to ensure everybody has an unobstructed view for photos and video. Each visitor will be given shoe covers to avoid scratches and slipping -- which you get to keep as a reminder of their experience on The Skywalk. A visitor’s center opens later in 2007 and includes a museum, movie theater and restaurants, as well as facilities for weddings. For sure, this will be a spectacular place to get married! Grand Canyon West is located approximately 120 miles east of Las Vegas and 72 miles northwest of Kingman, Arizona. The Skywalk is a project of the Hualapai Tribe, whose approximately 2,000 members own nearly one million acres of land throughout the Grand Canyon’s western rim. The capitol of the Hualapai Reservation is Peach Springs, Ariz, near historic Route 66. Other attractions at Grand Canyon West include The Indian Village with authentic dwellings, The Hualapai Market, and The Hualapai Ranch, a western town with horseback and wagon rides. Adventure travelers can access the river and water recreation activities at the bottom of the canyon via helicopter tours. Hummer tours are available along the rim of the canyon and through private areas that are otherwise inaccessible to the public. The Hualapai will also operate the only one day white water rafting trip through the Grand Canyon..
